HOW WE CAN CHANGE THE STORY

Summer should be a carefree time for children. You can make it one. To do that, we need free meals programs at schools, churches and community centers all summer long.

  • Only 15% of kids who qualify for free school meals are getting free summer meals.
  • Lots of barriers stand in their way: meal sites can be hard to get to, may have limited hours and might not be open in extreme heat or bad weather.
  • We need to fund existing summer meals sites, open new ones and explore new ways to reach kids - like mobile meals delivery.
  • We also need to advocate to lawmakers at all levels of government to improve and strengthen the summer meals program - removing barriers so we can reach more kids.
Hunger Fact:
43%

Percent of low-income families who say it’s harder to make ends meet during summer.
