STATEMENT: Share Our Strength's George Kelemen Urges Congress to Reverse Devastating Cuts to SNAP

“Plain and simple, if Congress doesn't intervene, we’re going to see a nationwide spike in child hunger in the coming years,” said Kelemen.

WASHINGTON, DC —  Sen. Ben Ray Lujan (NM), Ranking Member Amy Klobuchar (MN),  Rep. Jahana Hayes (CT-05) and Ranking Member Angie Craig (MN-2) have introduced the Restoring Food Security for American Families and Farmers Act of 2025 in the U.S. Senate and House of Representatives to reverse the nearly $200 billion in cuts to the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) signed into this summer. The following is a statement from George Kelemen, senior vice president for Share Our Strength and its No Kid Hungry campaign:

“The legislation introduced this week would reverse the devastating cuts to SNAP signed into law this summer, helping ensure millions of Americans can continue to put food on the table for their families.

“Without swift action, our nation’s most effective anti-hunger program will soon be in crisis. SNAP helps ensure nearly 16 million kids get the nutrition they need. Already, 1 in 3 parents living on low-incomes worry about running out of food - they simply can’t afford for their grocery benefits to be cut.

“Beyond missing out on meals at home, when a child loses access to SNAP, it makes it harder to access school meals and Summer EBT. Plain and simple: if Congress doesn't intervene, we’re going to see a nationwide spike in child hunger in the coming years.

“Additionally, far too many are ignoring the economic impact these cuts will have. We’re talking about stores closing, jobs lost, fewer deliveries of fresh produce - it will be devastating for many communities across the country.

“The recent shutdown proved that already complex benefit systems cannot be overhauled overnight. H.R. 1 puts an unprecedented administrative and financial burden on states - in fact, the massive cost shift could make it so challenging to operate the program that, in the worst case scenario, some states could be forced to stop providing SNAP benefits altogether. States simply cannot fill the gap left when federal SNAP dollars disappear.

“We must not let this happen. We support this effort in Congress to protect SNAP and urge members on both sides of the aisle to stand with families, farmers and small businesses by acting quickly to pass this legislation and repeal H.R. 1’s devastating cuts to SNAP.”
