Rebuilding for kids
In the wake of the coronavirus, millions of children are still living with hunger. Rebuilding starts with feeding every child, in every community.
No Kid Hungry is working with artists in five communities to create murals inspired by local children and their vision for a better future.

The flowers in the mural are orchids, which represent love and strength. The artist chose to depict them as full blossoms as well as buds to suggest the passage of time.

Since the pandemic struck, No Kid Hungry has provided over $2 million in grants to Michigan schools and community groups for equipment and supplies to help feed kids.

Artist Desiree Kelley used her own daughter as a model. "I wanted to show the mind of youth and innocence in the fight against this pandemic crisis; being strong and resilient,” she said.

"I wanted to create something hopeful with this mural,” said artist Desiree Kelley. “I wanted to show that rebuilding is near and that hope is around the corner."

Mural artist Tenbeete Solomon wanted to highlight the role of essential workers - like bus drivers - during the pandemic. "There are people who don’t have a choice to stay home," she said. "They’re the only reason we’re getting by."

The hands symbolize people coming together after a difficult time, said Tenbeete Solomon, the artist. "We need to reimagine a lot of things because a lot of things weren't working before.”

Since the pandemic struck, No Kid Hungry has provided over $1.4 million in grants to Washington DC schools and community groups working to feed local kids.

After hearing kids talk about their isolation during the pandemic, artist Steve Martinez chose to show them running and playing on a bright summer day.

In the wake of the coronavirus, millions of children are still living with hunger in the United States - as many as 1 in 6.

"In many cultures, cranes are a symbol of good luck and good things to come,” said Steve Martinez, the muralist. “The crane is a sign of renewal: kids being happy again and living long healthy lives.

The coronavirus pandemic was a crisis for everyone, especially families struggling to make ends meet. Today, 1 in 6 kids in the United States may still be living with hunger.

During the crisis, we saw people everywhere step up to help feed kids - from everyday donors to school staff to Citi and the New York Mets.

John P. Dessereau, who painted this mural, spoke to kids in Queens about the past year: "They want an emergence from the darkness of the pandemic. They see the Queensboro Bridge as a powerful metaphor for coming out of these dark times.”

With support from our donors and partners, No Kid Hungry provided $4 million in grants to help New York schools and communities feed children during the pandemic.

George F. Baker III, who painted this mural, spoke to local kids about the past year: "I heard their want and need for human connection. We all feel the need to be understood and close to others.”

Schools in Atlanta - and across the country - had to transform their meal programs overnight. Many loaded school buses with food and delivered them so students wouldn’t go hungry.
