Washington, D.C. - This morning, Congressman Elijah Cummings (D-MD) passed away from complications of longstanding health challenges. Mr. Cummings represented Maryland’s 7th Congressional District for 23 years and was the chair of the House Oversight and Reform Committee. The following is a statement from Share Our Strength President & CEO Tom Nelson on Mr. Cumming’s legacy:

“Chairman Cummings was a widely respected leader whose legacy spanned generations during his time in public service. He gave voice to those least able to speak for themselves and did so with great integrity, passion and thoughtfulness. He was a tireless social justice advocate throughout his life, fighting for our nation’s most vulnerable people, especially children in Baltimore and across the country. We are a better nation for his selfless service and his courageous leadership will be greatly missed.”
