Statement: Share Our Strength’s Lisa Davis on Universal Free Breakfast Program for Pennsylvania Children

"In Pennsylvania, school breakfast programs play a critical role in ensuring kids have access to the nutrition they need to learn, grow and reach their full potential. After all, just like pencils and books, food is an essential school supply," said Davis.

WASHINGTON, DC— Lisa Davis, Senior Vice President of Share Our Strength, issued the following statement commending Pennsylvania Governor Tom Wolf for implementing a program to provide universal free school breakfast for 1.7 million students across the commonwealth this school year.

“In Pennsylvania, school breakfast programs play a critical role in ensuring kids have access to the nutrition they need to learn, grow and reach their full potential. Providing breakfast for free to all kids better sets up student success: research shows that kids who eat breakfast are more focused, score significantly higher on tests, and miss less days of school. This, in turn,  means those kids are more likely to graduate.

“We applaud Governor Wolf for implementing this plan, positioning Pennsylvania as a national leader in ensuring that every student starts their school day with a healthy breakfast. After all, just like pencils and books, food is an essential school supply.”
