Washington, DC — Lisa Davis, Senior Vice President of the No Kid Hungry Campaign, released the following statement applauding the decision of Colorado voters to prioritize healthy school meals for all kids across the state.

“In Colorado–and throughout the country–we know school nutrition programs are a vital tool in supporting student success, in and out of school. With the passage of Proposition FF, all Colorado kids will now have access to free and healthy school meals. This is critical: according to Hunger Free Colorado, 60,000 kids across the state can’t afford school meals, yet don’t qualify for free or reduced-price meals. We commend the work of the Healthy School Meals for All (HSMA) Coalition for their work in making this a reality, and tip our hats to the voters of Colorado for pushing this over the finish line.

"We know school meals get kids the nutrition they need, but the benefits don’t stop there. When kids are eating healthy meals, they’re able to learn better. School meals lead to better educational outcomes–but also healthier kids, improved equity and a leveled playing field.”

"School meals are a lifeline for kids and their families throughout the state. Since March of 2020, to support their efforts to increase food access, No Kid Hungry has distributed nearly $1 million grants to schools, districts and community organizations in Colorado, helping serve almost 22 million meals. Grantees have used funds to purchase equipment, hire additional staff and implement creative solutions to continue to feed students even as new challenges arise."
