Summer Meals

For kids, summertime should mean food, friends and fun. But for kids who rely on school meals for their primary nutrition, summer can be a time of uncertainty about where and when they’ll have access to healthy food. Here are three things you need to know about hunger in the summer:

1 Summer can be tough on family finances. Low-income families say they spend an average of $300 more per month on food when kids are out of school.
2 Free, healthy meals are available to kids and teens at thousands of sites across the country.
3 Too many kids are missing out on free meals. While 21 million kids rely on free and reduced-price school lunches for their nutrition during the school year, only 3 million kids are getting free summer meals.
