FOOD Share of Ventura County

About FOOD Share of Ventura County

Since 1978, Food Share has been feeding the hungry in Ventura County. It all began when eight friends banded together to provide food to those in need under a bridge in Ventura, CA. The early philanthropic movement started in a family garage, quickly outgrew a donated fire station in Saticoy and now operates in Oxnard, CA with two warehouses with a combined 36,000 square feet. Today, staff and volunteers distribute more than 13 million pounds of food, or nearly 12 million meals annually through its 190 pantry and program partners. As Ventura County’s regional food bank, Food Share provides food for over 75,000 hungry friends and neighbors monthly.

Food Bank for Monterey County

About Food Bank for Monterey County

The Food Bank for Monterey County is the largest and most comprehensive provider of emergency supplemental food and a key proponent of anti-hunger education and advocacy in our community. For over 25 years, the Food Bank has been at the frontlines of fighting hunger and addressing nutritional needs in our community and we are committed to our mission “to lead community efforts in the awareness and elimination of hunger in Monterey County.” The only time we have ever interrupted service was in the wake of a devastating arson in 2015 that destroyed our entire delivery fleet, caused significant damage to our loading dock and facility, and forced us to dispose of our entire food supply. Despite this, we marshaled all available resources, including an unprecedented outpouring of community support, and were able to resume limited distributions within only two days and return to full operational capacity within a relatively short time. Since then, we have resumed program expansions and the creation of new ones that were delayed due to the arson, as we were forced to divert all funds toward recovery efforts. These programs, which include a Senior Produce Market, Youth Family Market, Farmworker Mobile Produce Pantry, Breast Cancer Patient Food Assistance Program, and Kids N.O.W. (Nutrition On Weekends) in addition to our three main large-scale food distribution programs, continue to grow as we modify and expand them to meet the ever-increasing need and the specific concerns of our most vulnerable populations-seniors, farm workers, and children.

The Food Bank has developed programs that provide food to meet the demand as well as support the nutritional needs of the people we serve. 1 in 4 emergency food recipients are children. Programs including Food for Children, Farm 2 Kids, and the School Pantry Program operate throughout the year to help alleviate childhood hunger.

Feeding San Diego

Feeding San Diego

Feeding San Diego is on a mission to solve hunger while ending food waste. Established in 2007, Feeding San Diego is the leading hunger-relief organization in San Diego County and the only Feeding America member in the region. More than 40% of food in our community goes to waste every day — more than enough to end hunger. Feeding San Diego connects and distributes food to neighbors in need from more than 500 food donors, including grocery stores, restaurants, and retailers like Starbucks. We also source food from more than 225 farms and packing sheds throughout California. The majority of this food would otherwise end up in the landfill. Feeding San Diego distributes healthy, nutritious meals to more than 63,000 children, individuals, seniors, and military members through two distinct methods: 100 direct service sites and 150 non-profit partnerships. Thanks to our non-profit partners, half of our food never comes to our distribution center, reducing pollution and expense. In addition to rescuing and distributing wholesome, high-quality food, Feeding San Diego ensures people can access additional food resources. We help hundreds of people enroll in CalFresh (food stamps) to receive benefits each year.

Details about the opportunity

Each week, we have hundreds of volunteers at our distribution center, who help complete essential tasks for the organization. We offer a variety of activities including:

BackPack: Fill bags with produce and staple items

Reclamation: Sort food that has been pulled from grocery store shelves to prevent it from reaching the landfill (approximately 60% is still edible and nutritious). Volunteers check expiration dates against their extended best by date and then sort and box each food by type.

Food Sorting/Labelling: Volunteers label blank cans called “brites” with nutrition information.

Gleaning: Volunteers sort produce from the California Association of Food Banks and other local donors. Varying differences in size, shape, and color are not preferred for sale in local grocery stores.

Office Volunteers are scheduled on an individual basis depending on interests and skills

Emergency Food Bank

About Emergency Food Bank

"The Emergency Food Bank Stockton/San Joaquin (EFB), founded in 1968, is the largest direct provider of packaged emergency food in San Joaquin County. We are a grassroots food bank that depends on the generosity of donors, supporters, and volunteers. An average of 275 households are served each day (M-F) at the EFB Main Pantry located at 7 W. Scotts Avenue. In addition, the Food Bank provides classes in general nutrition education, healthy meal planning and food preparation. We emphasize health, nutrition, food economics and education. The Food Bank also provides food products to partner pantries throughout the County, numerous non-profit agencies, community based organizations, and to events related to healthy living and nutrition. The Food Bank also provides a service to grocery stores, food processors, farmers and reclamation distribution centers by taking excess or usable foods that would otherwise be thrown away. Additionally, the EFB serves as a job training site by providing a place for the community to learn basic job skills, including warehouse operations, truck operation, data entry, and clerical office skills. The Emergency Food Bank is continually seeking volunteers, contributions and other forms of community support. Thanks for looking into the Emergency Food Bank!"
