Breaking News: Fewer Kids Going Hungry, Says USDA

There are new numbers out this week showing that fewer kids and families are going hungry. According to the USDA, we’re seeing the lowest levels of food insecurity since the 2008 recession.

That’s great news for kids. At the peak of the recession, in 2009, more than 17 million kids lived in a family that struggled with hunger. Last year it was down to 15 million and now 13 million.

The improving economy helps enormously, of course, but this dramatic improvement also shows the value of our strategy.

What we’re doing is working. The programs that No Kid Hungry and our supporters are funding and fighting for across the country are helping more kids get the food they need. Programs like making breakfast part of the regular school day and community sites that serve free meals in the summer.

But there are a lot more kids waiting for us. 13 million children going hungry in the United States is simply unacceptable.
