  • Gwyneth Paltrow caught some heat from the internet a week or so ago after she tried to shop for a week's worth of food using only $29 - the amount people receive in food benefits under the SNAP program (formerly known as food stamps). While it may seem that Gwyneth Paltrow is always catching some heat from the internet for one thing or another, we do agree wholeheartedly that more people ought to understand just how hard it can be to feed your family healthy foods on a limited budget (SPOILER ALERT: It is hard).   • Chef and restaurateur (and one of our all-time heroes) Joanne Chang has a wonderful piece in a the Wall Street Journal imagining the future of a less-hungry America and the power of school breakfast.
  • Amidst the unhappy news of tragedy, protest and violence in Baltimore, we've been heartened by signs of hope and resilience. As we know, kids from low-income neighborhoods who rely on school for regular meals are always hardest-hit when schools are closed, as they have been this week in Baltimore. But volunteers launched efforts to ensure that many of those kids could still get a meal.
